The African Union Commission (AUC) has commended the peaceful conduct of Guinea’s presidential election and congratulated President-elect General Mamadi Doumbouya following his decisive victory, while urging the international community to consider lifting sanctions imposed on the country.
In a communiqué issued on January 5, 2026, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, congratulated Doumbouya after the Supreme Court proclaimed the final results on January 4, confirming that he won the presidency with 86.72 per cent of the vote.
Youssouf praised the conduct of Guinean voters, saying their calm and orderly participation reflected strong public ownership of the electoral process.
“The Chairperson of the Commission commends the maturity of the Guinean people, who voted peacefully and calmly, a stance that demonstrates a genuine sense of ownership of the electoral process by the citizens,” the communiqué said.
The AUC also lauded national institutions and stakeholders involved in the polls, including election management bodies, political parties, candidates, the government and civil society, noting that their collective responsibility ensured a smooth electoral process.
He further acknowledged the role of technical and financial partners, saying their support helped deliver elections conducted in line with international standards and Guinea’s national legal framework.
Reaffirming the African Union’s engagement with Guinea, the Commission chair said the continental body remains committed to supporting the country’s return to constitutional order, democratic consolidation and respect for the rule of law.
“The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates his full commitment and that of the African Union to continue providing support to the Republic of Guinea for a swift return to constitutional order, the consolidation of democracy and the rule of law,” the statement said.
Youssouf said national unity, peace and stability were essential foundations for sustainable development in Guinea, particularly as the country continues its post-transition reforms.
Citing progress made since the start of the transition in 2021, the AUC chair urged the African Union and the wider international community to reassess the situation in Guinea and consider lifting sanctions imposed on the country.
He said removing the restrictions would help create favourable conditions for implementing the national roadmap aimed at rebuilding and modernising the state for the benefit of Guinean citizens.
The communiqué also called on all political and institutional actors to prioritise dialogue and consultation, and to rely on legal mechanisms to resolve disputes.
Youssouf urged stakeholders to complete the transition process through the organisation of inclusive and peaceful legislative, senatorial and local elections, warning that sustained stability would depend on continued adherence to democratic principles and consensus-building.
